There are at least three significantly different brake fluids on the market
(just counting automotive types), DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5. DOT3 dissolves live
(natural) rubber and is probably the one being referred to as dissolving
weather strip adhesive. DOT4 does not dissolve live rubber but does curdle
some types of paint. DOT5 is inert to rubber and paint (and is not
hydroscopic like 3 and 4).
