The standard US 120/240 volt system has been called many things by people
that
Don't know the system.

At the power pole for most homes is a transformer that has a 240 volt
Center tapped winding feeding the house. It is often called a
Split phase or center tapped single phase.

Some try to call it a 2 phase system, but that is not true.
There is a real 2 phase system, but the phases are out by 90 deg.
And would not be common in most homes.

Not sure if it is still used but there is that 3 phase mess
That is 120 volts and 208 volts. Just not common in the
Area I live in.
