A guess only, it might be tension. Its possible for the reversers on
some typewriters to reverse because there is too much tension on the
ribbon. Now the question is where the tension is coming from. Check the
fork the ribbon passes through to see if the clearance is the same as
the working one. You can also try holding back the spool that reverses
with a finger to increase tension and see if it makes it reverse.
