Greetings Greenkeyers!
Couldn't resist. With the entire Oyl family, from patriarch Cole Oyl and
his mom Nana Oyl, I had to add Olive's busy office-based cousin in! And I
am receiving GreenKeys Digest once more!!
If I wasn't so damned fat I'd tap dance! I am happy!
For now I use a two-part mixture for my machines:
(Equal parts, shake well and strain, sea salt on rim, chilled glass- but
don't bruise the ice. Pearl onion or olive? Your choice. I prefer the pearl
onion.)
#1- 3-in-One 30W electric motor oil (not the other one!)
for good viscosity.
#2- Hammond Tonewheel Generator Oil (Yes, Virginia! It's still available-
for all us diehard old B-3 Hammond freaks) for its wicking properties.
This seems to keep the beasties happy and spry. It doesn't have the
aromatherapeutic qualities of the genuine article, though...
Thank you Nick for preserving and making available Teletype Maintenance
School C-1 in .pdf format- I salute you, good sir! It covers the venerable
models 14, 15 and 19 and offers a veritable cornucopia of wisdom to those
of us who came in a little late for the class. Under the subject of
lubricating the machines it advises:
"The machine is ready for lubrication after being thoroughly cleaned and
the cleaning fluid has been removed from its parts."
"The Teletype Corp. specifies the use of KS 7470 oil and KS 7471 grease in
lubrication procedures. These materials are generally available at teletype
repair facilities but lack of these should in no way interfere with routine
maintenance. Any good grade of medium cup grease and good quality SAE 10
non-paraffin base automobile crankcase oil are satisfactory substitutes.
Typewriter and "3-in-1" oils do not have sufficient body for teletype
requirements and should not be used."
Knowing some synthetic stuff doesn't work on me as well as organics just
inspires the hell out of me to do the same with my old gear and keep
petroleum based lubricants on board. My machines are subjected to an
idyllic "life", and are pampered and cherished. While synthetics may be
touted as superior to petroleum products in many ways, and certainly have
their merits of application under fire, I maintain that it's not wise to
"slap-shift" a vintage Cadillac. I take the scenic route too. My machines
have outlived me already. I'd rather not tempt fate.
Just my dos centavos...
your corpulent compatriot,
Mark
