Thanks Nick and Wayne.
A little WD-40 and a minor adjustment on the print head got it working well
enough for testing.

I just got this 43 from Ebay last week and was pleased to find it was in
pretty good condition. It needed a little cleaning, but I don't see
anything wrong mechanically or electrically.
Is there anything to worry about inside? A battery that might start
leaking or capacitors prone to leaking?

The tension roller is extended all the way to the hard stop, so the ribbon
is loose enough that the roller wheels don't turn, it just slides over them.
Lightly touching the ribbon while it's printing tells me the ribbon is
advancing, it's just not obvious since the rollers aren't turning.
I can re-ink this one and make due but hopefully the ribbons Nick is
sending me aren't stretched out too far.
I'll be sure to remove the ribbon when not in use and store it in a plastic
bag so it doesn't stretch or dry out.

It's not as prestigious as a Model 33, but it's simpler, faster, quieter,
it has upper and lower-case and it takes up much less space.
The model 43 was the first computer I ever used, or rather my first
interaction with a computer, at Thurston high school in Springfield,
Oregon, in 1980.
We had a few terminals around the school, including one in the library.
They were connected to a time-share system called OTIS (Oregon Total
Information System)
I don't know what kind of computer was on the other end but once logged in
we got a basic prompt and could load and save programs from a directory.

I ended up making a minor mod to the RS232 to TTL converter board to bypass
the DCD signal so the terminal will receive and transmit without
handshaking.
That allowed it to talk with my PiDP-11 raspberry pi. I just need to change
the TERM type from VT100 to TTY.

I appreciate all the assistance and suggestions
Regards
