To report back and to thank those who sent direct suggestions, here's
the results.
Took the dash pot off again. Looked closer at the interior. It's black
inside, but smooth. The XYL being out of plain acetone and not knowing
what vitamin E in what she had might do, I opted for plain old rubbing
alcohol. I kept scrubbing until no more back came off of the interior
of the dashpot. Put a real thin coat of oil inside. Partial reassembly
gave me a chance to check it. It showed signs of being a major
improvement. Screw #2 of the go-back-together phase decided to drop
into the selector area. So I finished with #3 and flipped the printer
back on it's feet expecting the #2 to fall out on the table. No such
luck. Flipped back upside down and got out the heavy duty light.
Eventually saw it and it was in needle nosed pliers reach. Finished #2
and then tried a manual CR without screw and ball. Expected hard bang
on left margin. Put ball, spring and screw back it and it was so good I
tightened the lock nut right away.
