I haven’t heard of a kit but that doesn’t mean that they were not out there. I would look through all the catalogs and information on Navy-Radio.com <http://navy-radio.com/> for the teletypes, I am sure if there was something it would be there with a schematic.
I will say I leave my machine on 24/7 on autostart and I use about 1 roll a month along with 1 ribbon every 2 rolls (there is also an occasional run of printing from KPH or the Morning Net included in that month long run time also.)
I am using the POS supply 225 foot rolls that go for $95 a box (12 rolls) including shipping (part# B8716-225). Good quality Bond Paper, Made in USA, 1” core with end of roll red warning stripe)
The ribbons which are excellent come from ribbonsunlimited.com I buy just the ribbon and putt back on the metal spools (part #70BK 1/2” 13 yards Nylon with eyelets $9.50, cotton is $14.50, Silk is 18.50), I just use the nylon they are a little pricey but I have found that I get a lot more mileage out of the ribbons the others I have found.

One is positioned to activate a "low paper" warning light, but the machine would be allowed to continue running for a time after that. Then if the Teletype machine's human servant doesn't replace the paper roll in time, and it runs further down - dangerously low - the second switch would cut off the TTY machine power altogether to prevent running out and typing directly on the platen.

I want to make a low paper indicator light for my model 28 (just the printer) that would also cut the power to the machine, if left too long. In my head Id have to have two switches. One for the low level light and one for the power cut off. If I figure it out I will make one for my 15.
