What is the power output of the FT-817?
The three 6146 tubes in the Valiant will take a fair
amount less than 10 watts to drive to full output.
The 6146 is rated at 85 watts maximum PEP input on SSB
per RCA. That will make 85 times three = 255 watts
input maximum PEP. The output power will be about 60
to 65 percent of that depending on the band and could
be as low as about 50 percent on 10 meters. Again,
that is PEP. A "normal" wattmeter will run about 50
to 60 percent of the true peak reading in what it
reads when you modulate.
Yes, the amplifier runs in, if I remember correctly,
AB-1 which is definitely a linear application.

Has anyone tried using an FT-817 to drive a Valiant on
SSB? Is the Valiant amplifier truly linear in the SSB
position?
