"I don't know if I told this story here or not. Hit the delete key if
you've
heard this...
A while back, I ran a medfer from New Hampshire (ID: MS). Bill DeCarle
copied it up north of Montreal. This was in the days of Argo, etc, but
Bill
had a program that used DSP to help copy weak signals.
Anyway, I brought the TX inside the house and was making some
improvements
on the Ramsey Kit transmitter with the slug-tuned VFO. While doing that
I
was talking to someone in MD and Carl (TH) on the weekly 160 meter net.
The
guy in MD said that he could copy my beacon, faint but readable. I
indicated
that it was down right then. "Nope, it's there, faint but there".
I was running the transmitter in my workshop with a 5 ft piece of wire
as an
antenna laying horizontally on the workbench.

Mike Mideke used to be about 200 miles north of me and I swear he could
tell when I turned on a signal generator in my shop! A quiet location
will work wonders for reception.
