You're right -- the sound will be built into the mother board. It's nice to
have a machine with a line level as well as the usual microphone input.
While you can pad a line level source down to mike level (and block any DC
with a capacitor), the line inputs are usually quieter.

Otherwise, the laptop may be a good choice. A lot of in-the-shack RF garbage
problems come from CRT monitors. The LCD screens are generally "quieter."
