Mike,

As one who spent 11 months of 1970-71 at Cam Ranh Bay, I need to take 
exception to this.  "Nam" and sometimes "The Nam" was pretty much 
standard colloquial English throughout the 1970's, even among veterans.  
Maybe especially among veterans.  I think I usually said "Vietnam" to 
civilians.

BTW, The only Vietnam movie I've ever watched was Apocalypse Now. That 
was close enough.
